First 2 Simple Steps for Navigating Receptive Surrender
“She wasn’t where she had been. She wasn’t where she was going. But she was on her way.” ~~Jodi Hills
When you acknowledge you’ve entered Stage 2—Receptive Surrender--and stop incessant activity, you will discover your authentic self. As you eliminate the unnecessary, you learn what really matters. Once you put empty space in your day, various insights will begin to emerge. Slowing down actually speeds up the creative process.
Surrender is not passive, by any means. It is a state of inner activity, self-reflection being the major focus.
The self-reflection you do in Stage 2 enables you to live a better, more purposeful and powerful life. As in the first stage (see Respond to the Call to Greatness), this one follows four steps. But be warned. You’ll instinctively want to flip into busyness. That’s how the Ego works. Just do your best to stay receptive to your Soul’s quiet counsel. Again, begin by asking yourself a question.
Step 1: Ask Yourself—Who Am I?
The whole point of asking “Who am I?” is to get in touch with all parts of yourself—your light, your darkness, the misconceptions you’ve had about yourself, all those self-imposed blocks you didn’t even know were self-imposed. This question’s sole function is to help you learn to love and accept all those parts you once judged harshly, kept hidden, put down, or deemed false.
Because many, if not most, have spent a lifetime hiding your real self from others, seeking the answer to this question can be daunting. We’ve lost touch with who we really are. We have a whole array of unconscious decisions we’ve made about ourselves and life—usually from when we were very young—that have nothing to do with reality. Yet we give these arbitrary conclusions the weight of indisputable truths.
Identifying all those early decisions and erroneous beliefs that give rise to dysfunctional behavior which no longer serves us is precisely the work we need to do in Stage 2. We also need to identify, being brutally honest, all our skills, strengths, talents, and gifts, those marvelous attributes we frequently dismiss or devalue.
Ask yourself this question over and over again—Who am I really?
Journal about it, meditate, stare out the window, spend time processing the insights you receive. Ask people who know you well: What do you see in me that I don’t see in myself?
Step 2: Clarify Your Purpose
Remember, Sacred Success is purpose driven, not profit driven.
“There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to possess it.” ~~Napolean Hill in Think and Grow Rich
Here’s a distinction to make when clarifying your purpose. There’s a significant difference between drive (that burning desire) and addiction. Drive comes from a vision that nourishes our Soul and enriches our life. Addiction arises from the Ego’s fear-based beliefs, such as scarcity, inadequacy, and shame, and it inevitably leads to burnout.
Our purpose can only be found outside our comfort zone, beyond the Ego’s fiefdom of all that’s familiar. Busyness, therefore, is the Ego’s attempt to avoid this step. The Soul knows a strong sense of purpose generates an inexorable persistence in a way that money alone never can.
You may or may not know your purpose. My suggestion: Come with an empty cup and a willingness to think BIG. For generations, women have been groomed to play small, but that’s not how Sacred Success is played. Compromising yourself by lowering your sights, going for what seems “reasonable,” is the antithesis of Greatness.
Purposes can range from the unquestionably ambitious (create world peace) to the seemingly trivial (lead a simple life).
For example, I’d long assumed that my purpose was to empower women financially. During my period of Receptive Surrender, I let go of my business in general and my identity in particular to discover who I really was and why I was here. After a lifetime of struggling to be something I felt I wasn’t, I was ready for a considerably different approach.
I realized that my purpose, inspired by a Mother Teresa quote, is to be a pencil in God’s hand. Empowering women financially is how I accomplish my purpose. But, as I realized during my time in Surrender, my true purpose is spiritual, to act from a desire to serve, not from an unquenchable need to feel important.
When we clarify our purpose, angels appear, the way is shown, and opportunities occur, often disguised as coincidences. Our job is to recognize and receive these gifts fully.
I recommend you start with those 2 questions—
Who am I? What is my purpose?
Next week, we’ll discuss the final 2 steps of Receptive Surrender.
